Storyboard Text

  • Good evening ladies and gentlemen and welcome to The Bench! The 1900s number 1 talk show!
  • Today on the show we have the one and the only, Ernest Shackleton!
  • Welcome to The Bench Ernest! How does it feel to have reached the South Pole?
  • Well Sandra, at first I was shocked. So shocked.
  • I couldn't sit around and wait for the reality to kick in because all my men were dying from Hypothermia.
  • Did you say Hypothermia?! Wow Ernest, did you save them?
  • Yes Sandra, I did. It wasn't easy, but I managed to keep them alive.
  • It must have been freezing!
  • Yes, it sure was! In fact, the temperature was one of the hardest things to cope with on the journey.
  • The temperature reached -42 degrees.
  • One of the hardest things to cope with? What else did you find a challenge?
  • Well, I guess the whole journey was a challenge. First, my ship became frozen in thick ice. We waited for days but then the ship began sinking and we all had to transfer to an ice floe.
  • We were stuck there for two months, hoping that it would drift to land but it didn't. Instead, the ice floe split in two.
  • I ordered everyone into the lifeboats and we eventually reached land.
  • What happened next?
  • Well, Elephant Island was deserted. We had to leave and find help.
  • Wow! That's truly amazing! It's been a pleasure having you on the show Ernest.
  • I knew of a whaling station in the South Georgia Islands and decided to head there.
  • Thanks for having me Sandra.
