Storyboard Text

  • Mom! Your english is so good! Have you been speaking Twi while you live in New Jersey? How is it taking care of Cecile's mother? How is it working in the hospital? Darlene and I have missed you so much, 11 years is a long time.
  • Years later, in 2012...
  • Really?! Mom! I am so excited! We are finally going to be reunited as a family! I'm going to tell Darlene right now! Bye mom, I love you so much!
  • I miss you so much Rafia! It's been a lot of work here in New Jersey, it was a rough start. But I have very exciting news, you girls will be coming to New Jersey very soon! I just sent the money you will need to come over here. I'm going to see you girls so soon! Are you excited?
  • Now it was Rafia and Darlene's turn to take a one-way ticket to New Jersey to reunite with their mother...
  • It's been a long time since I've seen mommy. She left when I was only one, so I guess I'm excited to meet her. I'm going to miss Ghana but, I heard New Jersey is a pretty cool place.
  • Are you ready to see mom, Darlene? Are you ready to start your life in New Jersey?
  • And on April 6, 2012, the Nawuridam family were finally reunited. They embraced each other in one big hug, happy that after 11 years of being on two different continents, they were finally together...
  • Mom!
  • Rafia!!! Darlene!!!
  • Mom, did you hear about the escalating tensions in Syria because of it's dictatorship? Apparently it began in 2011 when pro-democracy protestors ran through the streets of Deraa and eventually, security forces opened fire on them, some of them were only teenagers like me. But it has been escalating since then and is considered a civil war.
  • Zzzzz
  • I heard about it, but I didn't realize how serious it was getting!
  • Maybe I should grow my hair out? I don't think I look good with short hair anymore. The way teachers teach in West Windsor Plainsboro South High School is so weird compared to schools in Ghana. Ghana was all about memorizing, but here it's more opinionated. Also, the food portions are huge! It's all so overwhelming!
  • Is that a girl?
  • Look! It's a new girl!
  • Her accent is weird. I can't understand anything she says!
  • Why would she come in the middle of freshman year?
  • Finally in May 2015, three and a half years later, Rafia graduates high school and plans to go to The College of New Jersey with a scholarship...
  • Go Rafia! So proud of you! We love you so much!!
  • China just ended the one child policy, which had been enforced for 35 years.
