Madame Loisel is upset because she needs to have a dress to go to a fancy party, but is considering not going because she thinks she won't compare to all of the other lavishly dressed women.
Now that Madame Loisel has a dress, she needs to have a jewel or gem to go with it. She doesn't want to look poor, and thinks jewelry is the answer.

Men begin to notice Madame Loisel, and she enjoys it very much. She realizes that this is the kind of life she wants, rather than the average one that she has.

Madame Loisel and her husband grow old and wary, as the had to work for ten years just to get back the money they lost while buying the replacement necklace. However, when she tells her friend he truth, she finds out that the necklace was actually just cheap and fake.
