The town of Philadelphia suffers from yellow fever where a 14 year-old girl named Matilda, nicknamed Mattie, lives. She shares an apartment above their family coffeehouse with her strict mom and grandfather while having lost loved ones at a very young age.
More people are starting to get infected by yellow fever and evacuating Philadelphia. One of the victims is Mattie’s mother which forces Mattie to go to Ludington’s.
Do they need help?
They have a weird way of showing it.
Mattie and her grandfather get kicked out of their wagon and both of them end up sick. They find their way to Bush Hill for Mattie and her grandfather to recover, rest, and wait until they can leave.
Silas, go away. Let me sleep. I haven't slept in years.
Many bad things start to happen after Mattie gets released from Bush Hill. Grandfather dies after getting robbed at their house by crooks, and Mattie is left alone to struggle in a dead city.
Truly, I wasn't the only one in Philadelphia
Mattie is still mourning over the death of her grandfather but she is happy to find out that her mother is not dead after finding Eliza. She finds an abandoned child, named Nell and then brings her to Joseph’s apartment where Joseph’s twins and Nell get sick.
Mattie wakes up and sees frost outside, which indicates the fever is over. The coffeehouse opens up again, and Mattie’s mother returns home.
