The workers come and find Curleys wifes body. Eager to get revenge, Curley sets out to kill Lennie as he figured out he was the culprit. George steals another workers gun and goes to the Salinas River where he finds Lennie and kills him peacefully before the others could find Lennie and make him suffer. This symbolises the end of their dream to have their own, better life.
The next evening when all the other workers have gone to town, Lennie goes to talk to Crooks in Crooks' room where they are later joined by Candy. Not too long after, Curleys wife comes in and starts causing trouble by flirting with Lennie and threatening Crooks. Eventually Candy has enough and yells at her to get out, which she does.
The next morning Lennie is in the barn when he is visited by Curleys wife who starts to talk to him. She invites Lennie to stroke her hair and in the process Lennie accidentally snaps her neck. Terrified that George will yell at him about it, Lennie rushes to leave the ranch and hide by the Salinas River to wait for George as previously instructed.
