  • A CUMULATIVE REFLECTION  Interesting Topics
  • Oh, hello! You must be one of our new HON272 students. Welcome! I'm Lucy.
  • You're probably wondering how HON272 will be different from HON171.
  • Similar to HON171, we'll still discuss various texts in class, but this semester we will focus on more contemporary philosophers and themes like liberty, colonialism, war, and identity.
  • In the private use of reason, Kant contends that public servants are obligated to carry out the responsibilities of their position, no matter their personal opinion.
  • We first began with Immanuel Kant's, "What is Enlightenment?". He distinguished the difference between the private and public use of reason.
  • We are planning to raise taxes...
  • But outside of their civil post, these people can voice their opinions are scholars in the public use of reason.
  • We need to revise these tax laws!
  • In addition to his ideas on the public and private use of reasoning, Kant also stresses the importance of having the "courage" to think for oneself, rather than allowing others think for us.
  • His philosophies are so influential that they appear in some of the later texts of the HON272 course, including those by Hannah Arendt and Simone de Beauvoir. Fascinating, right?
