William Armstrong is born with many health problems. He is expected to die, but he ends up surviving.
The narrator teaches William Armstrong how to crawl, and is nicknamed Doodle because how how he looks when he crawls. The narrator teaches Doodle How to walk, and sets sets out to teach him to run and swim.
During dinner, Doodle and the narrator hears and find a scarlet Ibis. The bird is injured and dies under the tree. The narrator and the family move on, but Doodle feels sympathy for the dead bird, and decides to bury him
