TWO KINDS BY: Amy Tan
A mother and daughter lived in an apartment in Sacramento, California. The mother wanted her daughter to be a child prodigy.
After many trials and errors for things that could make her daughter a prodigy, she settled on her being a pianist. The mother traded cleaning services with Mr. Chong, a retired piano teacher who lived in their apartment so he could teach her daughter how to play the piano.
The daughter practiced every day for two hours. However, she got away with her mistakes and did as little work as possible when she learned Mr. Chong was deaf. This caused her to do a terrible job in the talent show her mother put her in because she kept playing the wrong notes.
Later in her life, the daughter had the piano tuned. After she had it tuned, she started to play the song she played at the talent show and enjoyed it. Overall her mother taught her daughter a lesson. Though she didn't mean to, she taught her daughter to never let anyone change her and to be herself.
