Carly was new at her school and had just made a new friend, Anna. They decided to sit together at lunch that day. Carly desperately wanted to impress Anna and fit in.
That night Carly went to the hair salon to dye her hair black. She thought dyeing her hair the same as Anna's would make Anna like her better.
I want it black!
The next day the girls decided to meet up fro lunch again, but when Anna saw Carly she barely even recognized her.
This is weird... she dyed her hair the same color as mine...
Feeling creeped out, Anna went to go see her favorite teacher. She explained the situation to her teacher and told her how nervous and creeped out she was.
Her teacher explained that Soloman Ash had a theory that social influences, such as obedience, conformity, and compliance, influence behavior. She explained how Carly dyed her hair to make Anna like her more which is explained by conformity.
Have you heard of the Sociocultural Perspective in psychology?
Feeling better, Anna thanked her teacher and decided to go back to lunch.
