  • Hester Prynne was sent to jail for committing the crime of Adultery, and had a baby, Pearl, while in prison. As part of her punishment, she is marked with the scarlet letter "A" for Adultress.
  • Hester Prynne's husband, who has been gone overseas, returns to town under the name of Roger Chillingworth, determined to find out who Hester's lover is.

  • Mr. Chillingworth had quickly decided the culprit was a townsman named Arthur Dimmesdale, and so he spend the next 7 years torturing him with guilt. This is the reason arthur starts to become very ill.
  • Once Hester tells Arthur who Mr. Chillingworth actually is, they devise a plan for them and Pearl to go back to England and settle there. Arthur, still feeling guilt, is starting to find a red mark appearing on his chest.

  • Suddenly, Arthur backs out of the plan and admits his sin to the whole town, dying immediately after. Now dead, all of Arthur's fortune is left to Pearl, which allows her and Hester to move back to England.

  • Hester Prynne eventually return to the colony, still wearing her scarlet letter, where she eventually dies. She is buried next to Arthur Dimmesdale, and her tombstone is marked with an "A".
