  • Internal Conflict of Marley the Ghost
  • "'Business!' cried the Ghost, wringing his hands again. 'Mankind was my businss.'"
  • Two gentlemen come in to Scrooge's counting house and ask if he would like to donate money to the poor. Scrooge says they should go to prison, and the gentlemen say some would rather die. This is Scrooge's response. This indirectly characterizes Scrooge as rude because he refers to poor people as "surplus population" and thinks they should die.
  • Theme
  • When Bob Cratchit asks for Christmas day off, Scrooge says Christmas is no reason to get the day off of work and still get paid. This indirectly characterizes Scrooge as stingy because he cares about money more than his clerks enjoyment of a holiday.
  • Symbolism
  • "'This boy is Ignorance. This girl is Want. Beware of them both, and all of their degree, but most of all beware this boy, for on his brow I see that written which i Doom, unless the writing be erased.
  • When Marley's Ghost comes and talks to Scrooge he is wearing long heavy chains. He says mankind should have business and he should have cared about people more than money. This shows internal conflict because Marley is regretting the decisions he made in his life.
  • Theme
  • "My little, little child!"
  • On Christmas Eve, Fezziwig throws a party. He invites many people, rich and poor, and they all enjoy themselves. This shows the theme of equality because he invites and has a good time with everyone.
  • "In they all came, one after another; some shyly, some boldly, some gracefully, some awkwardly, some pushing, some puling; in they all came, anyhow and everyhow."
  • When Scrooge is with the Ghost of Christmas Present, the Ghost pulls out two children from his garments. He says they are Ignorance and Want and they are doomed unless something changes. The Ghost symbolizes England because they hid their ignorant and needed poor people instead of helping them.
  • When Scrooge is seeing the future, he sees Tiny Tim die. Bob is very sad. This shows the theme of the importance of kindness because no one cared when Scrooge died, but Tiny Tim die, his family is very upset because he was a good child and didn't deserve what happened to him.
