Storyboard Text

  • Some notes can be more sarcastic and dismissive like "HA!!" and "Please!"
  • Sometimes the notes I write in the margin are critical and angry with the author.
  • They seem to say to authors like Conor Cruise O'Brien and Kierkegaard, "Help me understand what you are saying."
  • I try to imagine what people may look like while writing rude critiques like "Don't be a ninny."
  • Students are modest and sometimes you can hardly even tell that they analyzed their reading.
  • Some students don't dig deep enough and become cheerleaders for the author by leaving notes that agree with everything they say.
  • They write things like "metaphor" and "Irony". These things barely scratch the surface of an analysis.
  • Some college students have managed to never leave notes like "Man vs. Nature". It is time for these students to move on to deeper thinking.
  • It is no secret that we all have written things in the margins just to show that we read and deciphered the text.
  • But we also have all left notes that developed a thought and enriched our thinking.
  • Even Irish monks have taken the time to write down what they are feeling along the side of scriptures.
  • We are still reading the thoughts of these monks. Their notes have been synthesized into the literature and writing we read today.
  • And sometimes you cannot fully understand the writings of someone until you have engaged yourself in the annotations and critiques of someone else. For example, you have not read Joshua Reynolds until you have read Blake's furious notes of him.
  • The one note that i will never forget and will affect me forever is one that was written in a copy of The Catcher in the Rye. A beautiful girl left a note alongside greasy stains saying, "Pardon the egg salad stains, but I'm in love."
  • Notes that show your thinking are important!
