  • France was considered the most advanced country in Europe having a large population and foreign trade.
  • France was the Center of Political and Social Enlightement
  • Great unrest rose in France as a result. Enlightenment ideas grew from John Locke, Rousseau, and Voltaire.
  • France's king Louis XVI was a weak leader and paid little to no attention to the towns people of France
  • But France's wealth was presented outwardly only showing off noble wealth, in truly the citizens of France lived in turmoil
  • Members of the National Convention were members of the poor third estate. This group of people were not respected in Government so they established a representative government.
  • The National Assembly was created to stress the views of the Enlightenment. The convention took power of France and ended the long monarch in France.
  • The National Assembly was in a Tennis Court when they drafted the new Constitution named the Tennis Court Oath.
  • Dawn of the Revolution
  • The mob attacked and hacked guards and beat prison commanders to death.
  • Rumors of Louis using military force to calm the citizens made towns people mad.
  • This attacked prompted the area of Great Fear in France.
  • The attack on Bastile became symbolic to the French Revolution. In France July 14th is Bastille Day.
  • Angry citizens grabbed arms and stormed into the prison of Bastille.
  • Radicals were on the left side of the hall, they wanted major change in government.
  • The Assembly took control of the Catholic Church. The Assembly also stripped the king of his authority.
  • Moderates were in the center of the hall and wanted some government change.
  • Assembly Created the "Rights of Man" saying alll men are born free.
  • The Assembly Reforms France
  • There were groups in the national assembly
  • Conservatives were in the right side of the hall and wanted few changes in governmnt.
  • As a result King Louis XIV and his wife Queen Antoinette were found guilty and were guilotined.
  • As the war continues Enlightenment Ideas were rapidly growing in France.
  • Austria and Prussia were anger by the revolution and as a result France declared war on them.
  • Roberspierre rules France as a dictator era known as "Reign of Terror"
  • Robespierre gains control by supporters.
  • Robespierre wanted to protect the Revolution ideas he did his by having many trials that ended with beheadings by the guillotine. It became so extreme that even members of the convention had to reevaluate themselves.
  • The "Reign of Terror" ended when the National Convention arrested and executed Robespierre by the guillotine. The power of France was then handed over to Napoleon Bonaporte .
