Donald Thomas was sitting in the cafeteria at Lindenwood University in Saint Charles, Missouri, boasting about his slam dunk prowess with a few guys from the track team.
Carlos Mattis which is Lindenwood's top high jumper, bet Thomas that he couldnt clear 6'6 in a high jump competition. So, Thomas went home and grabbed his sneakers and returned to the Lindenwood field house.
Two months later, Thomas completed at the commonwealth Games in Australia against some of the best professional jumpers in the world, wearing tennis shoes. He placed 4th in a worldclass field, a result that actually confuses him because him because he did not yet understand how tiebreakers work in a high jump and thought he was in 3rd place until the results were announced.
Thomas advanced easily to the finals, as the competition comes it went to Thomas's turn and as he went up he stutter stepped his way to a miss at 7'3 each jumper has three attempts per height. Holmes was cruising passing all attempts so far without a single miss
Thomas's turn came up as Holmes is winning all attempts with the leading height of 7'8.5". Thomas first attempt went wrong but completed 7'8.5" on his first attempt, tied up with Holmes. Holmes turn comes up he goes and fails his first attempt, then 2nd, comes final attempt, he jumps, clipped the board with his legs and fails final attempt.
Thomas the goes up for his turn, completing the jump at 8'2", setting the world record for the highest jump, winning the 2007 high jump competition setting history.
