Use your pencil and paper and write down what I say....
I'm sorry, Salva. Your friend...
An eleven year old boy named Salva is living in Southern Sudan in 1985. He is in school daydreaming about when him and his friends would make clay cows and cook caught squirrels together while his teacher is teaching them Arabic. He is also dreaming about what he would do when he got home.
Bye bye, Little Dinka. Ha ha!
During school, Salva and his friends hear gunfire outside and his teacher tells them to go to the bush. Salva is thinking about going back home but, decides not to. He is worrying about his family and how he is going to find them. He sees many people running and screamming in Loun-Ariik. Salva runs into the bush, afraid.
I'm going to America!
While Salva is walking with a group of men and women in Atout, he steps on someone's hand. He befriends the child, named Marial. He and Marial talk and walk together. Some days later, when Salva wakes up, Marial isn't beside him. He checks outside and sees his uncle near a pool of blood. He finds out Marial was attacked and eaten by a lion.
Few days later, Salva's uncle stops the group to rest. Salva hears loud voices and laughs. Nuer men with guns and rifles order everyone to put their hands in the air. They loot some of the people in the group and order Uncle Jewiir to put his rifle down and tie him to a tree. Salva hears laughs and three gunshots. That day, they bury Uncle close by.
N-no! U-uncle Jewiir, I'm right here. Stay with me, I can't have another Marial! Please!
Salva has been living in refugee camps for years. Everyday he checks the list to see if he can go to America. Finally, one day, his name is on the list. He can finally go to America!
Salva flies to America and greets his new family. He gets heavy clothing from them and puts it on. He thinks he looks funny, but when he goes outside, he's glad he's warm.
