During Carnival in Italy, Montresor ran into Fortunato,and offered to share a very nice bottle of wine with hi. But, Fortunato seemed ill and the wine was in the catacombs. Suspense: We don't know how the plan will be executed.
Montresor claims that Fortunato has gravely insulted him, and is plotting to get his revenge. But, he doesn't tell the reader what Fortunato has done, but he makes it seems like it was unforgivable. Suspense: Fortunato doesn't know he'll be killed
Montresor lures Fortunato down into the dark and into the eerie wine vault. As suspense builds up, Montresor keeps asking Fortunato if he would like to turn back because he seems ill. But, he continues to drink wine to ease his cough. Suspense: It's normal for people to get murdered in cellars.
When they reach their destination, there is no Amontillado, but there was a hole in the wall. Montresor shackles Fortunato inside, and he begins to seal up the wall with bricks. Suspense:We don't know what will happen at this point.
As the last few bricks are laid down, Fortunato screams and yells for Montresor to stop, but it's too late. Montresor has succeeded with his revenge. Suspense: We wonder if he will live.
Montresor walks away with only the sound of Fortunato's jingling jester bells echoing in the tomb. He replaces the bones of the crypt. In the end, he claims that no on has disturbed them for 50 years, and Montresor had gotten away with his plot. Suspense: We now find out that Montresor killed him.
