  • Figures of Speech-Oxymoron
  • The stones represent death since that was the item that took Tessie's life away. Every year stones are used to kill victims of The Lottery.
  • Tone
  • ''morning was clear and sunny''  gives a image of sight. This quote makes the reader think it's a regular day in a normal town.
  • Theme
  •  This is a Oxymoron because stoning someone to death is a very slow and painful process. When Mr.Summers says "Let's finish this quickly" it doesn't make no sense to kill someone quickly with stones.
  • Symbol
  • The story gives a big tone of suspense because in the end nobody wins the lottery, but take away a person's life.
  • The theme of the story is saying that traditions aren't always good to keep. They end up having consequences.
  • Old man Warner represents the symbol of putting pressure to keep tradition going because he is the oldest man in the town. He claims that this tradition has been going on for years and how the villagers shouldn't mess with traditions.
