  • “But man is not made for defeat.” Pg 103 He preservers through his hardships because he believes that a man should never admit in defeat.

  • “Perhaps I should not have been a fisherman, he thought.” Pg 50 He started to have doubts, but he still didn’t stop, even while wondering if he was good enough, he strived to be better.

  • “Five and I nearly were killed when I brought the fish in too green and he nearly tore the boat to pieces.” Pg 12 He taught the boy how to fish and now he loves him, and even though the boy almost died, he kept taking him out and shaped out who the boy is now.
  • “They had gone one day and one night with their elbows on a chalk line on the table and their forearms straight up and their hands gripped tight.” Pg 69 Even when he was younger he kept on fighting even though he was probably going through cramps and lack of sleep.

  • “Everything about him was old except his eyes and they were the same colors as the sea and were cheerful and undefeated.” pg 10 Even though he looked old and was old on the inside he acted young and kept going despite his age and that reflected in his eyes.
