  • Sectionalism in the 1800s was the division of the Northern and Southern United States into opposing “sections”. One reason that sectionalism grew was that the North and the South had very different economic interests.

  • America gained more territory, population increases in the west, Utah & New Mexico territories would be allowed to vote on the issue of slavery. David Wilmot and Senator John Calhoun make proposals. Neither proposals pass.

  • John Brown was a radical abolitionist who believed in the violent overthrow of the slavery system. Brown soon became a hero in the eyes of Northern people and the south viewed him as the opposite, a lunatic/madman.
  • Lincoln had become the symbol of the frontier, hard work, the self-made man. His debates had made him a national figure in early 1860 made him even better known. After the election he was the new president.
