Alright team, our first game of the season is here
If you guys think that you can play around during the game. You can work now.
Herb gives his team a talk before the game.
Mike Eurizione... Winthrop Massachus
I play for... the United States of America
"That's all gentlemen"
Who do you play for?
The game started and ended. America and Sweden tied.
"The rest of the world is afraid of them, boys, we won't be"
Herb made them do drills over and over and over and over again; for hours. By the end of the night all of the players were exhausted. They weren't going to get to go home until...
Mike Eruzione stepped forward and called out his name and where he is from. Herb asked him who he played for. Instead of saying Boston University he said The United States of America. That's all Herb wanted. He wanted his team to be a team; not a bunch of kids who still think they are playing college hockey. This is the Olympics.
Herb talks to his team about the hardest game for them to get past, the US versus the Soviets. Herb tells them that he knows "a way to stay with this team." The way to stay with them is to take the way they play and do the same thing to throw them off. "The team that is finally willing to do this is the team that has a chance to put them down." He tells his team that they will change their game, even though the NHL will not.
Herb told them that "no one has ever worked hard enough to skate with the Soviets team for an entire game. Gentlemen, we are going to work hard enough." At practice they did just that. They worked and worked. Many different drills over and over again, but they knew this is what they had to do to beat the "best team in the world." So this is what they did.
