Storyboard Text

  • I just started talking to this really cute guy!
  • I'm so happy for you! Tell me everything!
  •
  • You have to stay strong!
  •
  • I don't feel the same way... I don't think we should be friends anymore
  • Mel has had a crush on her best friend, Amy, for months. She always gets jealous when she talks about boys and she envisions herself to be in a relationship with her.
  • "Love is uncertain. It's incredibly risky. And loving someone leave s us emotionally exposed. Yes it's scary and yes, we're open to being hurt, but can you imagine your life without loving someone?" (Brown Daring Greatly 34)
  • Mel is too afraid of telling Amy how she feels because she does not want to be vulnerable. To her, being vulnerable means being weak, so she decides to "suck it up" and bottle up her emotions. She'd rather hide her feelings than risk discussing emotions that she would rather keep hidden away.
  • I'm so glad you told me!
  • She is also afraid of the shame she might feel if she is rejected. She wants to feel loved and like she belongs and she believes that vunerability will take away her sense of belonging.
  • One night, she listened to Brene Brown's TED Talk on vulnerability. She learned that being vulnerable was not inherently a bad thing. Being vulnerable represents strength and courage. She decided that it was time to acknowledge her feelings and tell Amy everything.
  • The next day, Mel opened up to Amy and told her about her feelings. Amy thanked her for being vulnerable and explained that she felt the same way but she was too afraid of feeling ashamed to tell Amy.
  • Amy being vulnerable allowed her to forge a loving relationship with someone she truly cared about. As she learns to harness vulnerability as one of her strengths, she becomes more in tune to her emotions and is able to live according to her standards and not others.
