  • Percy pushed me!
  • "I managed to get to my feet. I raised my sword, but Clarisse slammed it aside with her spear as sparks flew. Now both of my arms felt numb." (pg. 121) Percy is in a fight with Clarisse and her teammates.
  • Character vs. Nature
  • "There was a huge grinding noise under our feet. Black smoke poured from the dashboard and the whole bus filled with a smell like rotten eggs. The driver cursed and limped the Greyhound over to the side of the highway." (pg. 25) The bus breaks down and angers the driver.
  • Character vs. Self
  • I'm the worst...
  • "I don't remember touching her, but the next thing I knew, Nancy was sitting on her butt in the fountain, screaming, "Percy pushed me!" (pg.9) Nancy blames Percy for her ending up in the fountain.
  • Character vs. Society
  • "Our driver's-side doors were wedged in the mud. The roof had cracked open like an eggshell and rain was pouring in." (pg. 48) The mud wedged the door and the rain poured in.
  • '"I'm sorry," Grover sniffled. "I'm a failure. I'm-I'm the worst satyr in the world."' (pg. 64) Grover thinks he is a failure and is not a good satyr.
  • "Wherever I went, campers pointed at me and murmured something about toilet water." (pg. 98) The campers talked and gossiped about Percy.
