  • In the early 1600's Kin James The first was crowned, King James believed in the divine rights of kings meaning his power came from god and not the people. This caused friction between him and parliament because he believed he did not have to listen to them.
  • The King started a civil war with parliament in 1642. The supporters of the kind were called cavaliers and the supporters of parliament were called Round heads.
  • Oliver Cromwell was victorious in the battle vs. the King and purged parliament of supporters then turned the government into a dictatorship. After his death they went back to a monarchy. Charles the second was crowned and he did not believed in the divine rights.
  • Bill of Rights
  • James The Second becomes king and is openly catholic. Parliament becomes worried about him being catholic. Group of English nobles encourage William of orange to take over. William and his wife Mary invade and James The Second flees to France.
  • William and Mary become king and queen which leads to the end of the Divine rights of king.
  • Divine RIghts
  • Mary and William instituted the English bill of rights which laid the foundation for a constitutional monarchy.
