Gretel is Bruno's sister and is often portrayed as a "Hopeless Case". She thinks that the new house they move to is not too bad, but then sees that camp. She has a giant collection of dolls, and only gets rid of then towards the end of the book. She is twelve when she develops a crush on Lieutenant Kotler, and still has it when she turns thirteen.

Lieutenant Kotler is a man who very many people dislike. He is a teenager, probably 19. He is of high ranking and is feared and hated by many people. He is also very abusive to the servants, especially Pavel, and he kills Pavel. He is having an affair with Bruno's mother, and later gets fire because his father moved to Switzerland.
"Those people...well, they're not people at all, Bruno."

Pavel is an old man, probably around his 40's or 50's. He peels the vegetables for Bruno and his family's dinner. When Bruno fell off his swing, Pavel cleaned him up, which was a big risk he took. One night, Pavel is very tired and accidentally spills wine on Lieutenant Kotler. Kotler kills Pavel.

Shmuel is a little boy who lives in a concentration camp with his father and brother. One day he is sitting by one side of the fence and meets Bruno. They instantly become friends. Shmuel is nine, like Bruno, and they have the same birthday. They meet up after lunch time and Bruno gives Shmuel food.
