This story begins with the death of Miss Emily. The whole town attends her funeral held in her own home, a home no one has entered in 10 years.
Miss Emily lives with her controlling father, Mr Grierson. Mr Grierson does not let young Emily date anyone, for he thinks no one will be good enough for his daughter. Emily becomes very attached to her father because it had been just the two of them for most of her life. Emily's father passes away putting Emily into isolating herself.
After years of isolation, Emily finally leaves her house and goes to town. While she was out she meets a charming man named Homer. Emily falls deep in love with Homer, but he does not consider himself a "Marrying Man."
Miss Emily goes and buys arsenic, and the pharmacist asks what she needs it for. Emily does not respond and just gives the Pharmacist a serious look. A little while later, people begin to notice that Emily's lover Homer has disappeared, this causes confusion and gossip to spread.
The townsfolk begin to smell something rotten coming from Miss Emily's home. Everyone became suspicious of what the smell could be but never found out. A few years later Miss Emily passed away.
What is that smell?
After, a few townsfolk break into Miss Emily's room to find something they never would have guessed they'd see. Laying there, was the ugly truth, that all those years Emily had Homers corpse locked in her home.
