  • Skeeter goes to Aibileen's home and wants to ask her if she can interview her for a book about her life as a black maid. This is the first time she actually talks to Aibileen. "I want to interview you. About what it's like to work as a maid." Pg. 119
  • Step five - "Crossing the Threshold"
  • Aibileen doesn't want to do the interview and says no. She has a lot to lose if she gets caught. She could go to jail. "I sigh, stare out at the yard. Gentle as I can, I say, No ma'am." Pg. 120
  • Step six - "Test and Enemies"

  • Aibileen has Skeeter over to her house when she totally ready to do the book. This is when conflict starts. "Well, to start, um, when and where were you born? She swallows, nods. Nineteen oh-nine. Piedmont plantation down in Cherokee County." Pg.168
  • This is where Skeeter and Aibileen find out who will be against this book. Skeeter comes up to Aibileen, Elizabeth and Hilly at the pool. Hilly tells Skeeter why she isn't talking to her and makes it clear she doesn't want anything to do with this. " You know as well as I do, there are good, tax paying white people in this town and would fight you to the death on this. You want to let them get in our swimming pools? Let them put their hands on everything in our grocery store?" Pg. 241
