Gladiators would rarely fight to the death, but they did kill criminals as punishment and took control over animals. It brought people together and got them to socialize. It gave rulers popularity.
Here, in the Colosseum (AKA Flavian Amphitheater) slaves and prisoners would fight eachother and animals for entertainment. It was the largest Amphitheater in the Roman world.
There were over 20 different types of Gladiators. The amphitheater actually took less than 10 years to build, despite its massive size. It can seat about 55,000 people!
