Andrew Jackson marches into Florida with 1700 troops and invades Spanish Colony. Spain demanded that Jackson be returned to Washington to be punished.
In the early 1800's Jefferson sent two diplomats to buy Florida from Spain.
Spain didn't agree to the deal though.
Years later in 1818, President Monroe sends Andrew Jackson to Georgia to end raids by the Seminole Indians. Jackson did not have the authority to raid Spanish Colony, only to chase raiding Seminoles.
President Monroe asked for advice to his cabinet and John Quincy Adams said to give a blunt message to Spain: to govern or get out.
Spain did not want war so they decided to get out and agreed to give Florida to the United States. The United States decided to pay off 5 million dollars in settlers' claims.
