Hi, I'm Lorena and I'm in an sea. Yeah I know, it's a desert, but it did used to be a body of water., the Aral Sea in fact.
In the 1920's the Stalin of the Uzbek S.R.R and the Soviet empire, ordered for irrigation canals which led water from the Amu Darya and the Syr Darya into the surrounding desert.
When the 1960's hit, the system became unstable and the water rapidly decreased in the Aral sea.
Now the residents of Karakalpakistan have no say in what happens to the water of the Amu Darya, because other countries lay claim to it, even if the water is rightfully the Aral Sea's.
The Soviets knew full well what they were doing but didn't care.
The Aral Sea went from 98 feet to a barren area.
Now there are dust storms filled with sodium chloride and pesticides.
