Nya is eleven years old. She is carrying a jug to go fetch water from the pond for her family. Nya walks eight hours everyday to go get some water from the lake.
When Nya takes her sister Akeer with her to go get water, she becomes sick. Nya has known many people who have suffered from the same illness as Akeer's. Akeer's family takes her to a special place to get medical help. The nurse tells Akeer's mother that the sickness came from drinking the dirty water.
Two men arrived at Nya's village wanting to speak to the chief. They spoke to the oldest boys who led them to the home of the chief, Nya's uncle. The two men spoke with the chief about the water.
When the men finished talking to each other, they walked a bit and found two trees. The two men examined the area between the trees, and decided that it would be the best place to find water. They told the chief then began to clear the land to prepare for digging. Nya and the rest of her village had doubt that they would be able to find water.
We can dig between these two trees for water.
Once they finished clearing the land, they began to drill down into the Earth. While the men were drilling, the women went to go get piles of rocks and stones to be pounded into gravel. Nya didn't know why they needed gravel and the pipes that the two men had brought, but all she knows is that with all the sounds of people working hard there was no sound of water.
Bang Bang Bang
Bang Bang Bang
After 3 days of working hard in search for water, water finally sprouted out of the whole. Everyone gathered around and began to cheer and celebrate by singing songs and clapping along. But there was one problem that bothered Nya, the water wasn't clear it was brown heavy looking and full of mud.
