Montresor didn't kill Fortunado right away so his anger continued to build and progresivley get worse and he grew more and more mad. Montresor wanted to kill the man, Fortunado, who insulted him. Which had ruined Montrsor's family reputation.
Montresor had no reason to kill Fortunado.
"Fortunado had insulted me. So I VOWED revenge. Not in so many words, of course. Never aloud." Montresor basically said he had "insulted me, so now i'm going to kill him. But yet he was only insulted. From what it says I would say he over exagerated.
