  • Egypt's Impact on the Cold War
  • 1956
  • Egypt is invaded by Britain, France and Israel over the nationalisation of the Suez Canal. This fails over US opposition. This greatly enhances the president's standing at home and abroad.
  • 1961-1966
  • There was a nationalisation of industry and an ambitious welfare program. There was also a repression of Muslim brotherhood and overall this attempt to boost the economy failed.

  • 1977
  • In 1977, President Sadat visits Israel leading to the 1979 peace treaty and the return of the occupied Sinai Peninsula. Also, Egypt was suspended from the Arab League until 1989.
  • Peace Treaty
  • 1981
  • President Sadat is assassinated by Islamist extremists one month after clampdown on private press in wake of anti-government riots. It was succeeded by vice president Hosni Mubarak.
  • 1991
  • Egypt joins allied coalition in attempt to expel Iraqi troops from Kuwait. They ended up benefiting due to debt relief and loans. This allowed the government to attempt to liberalise economy.
