Bruno is a nine year old boy who is very small for his age. Bruno is very curious and loves to explore. Bruno loved exploring in his old house in Berlin, because of all of the hidden nooks and crannies. Bruno hates his new house, Out-WIth and doesn’t really understand at all why his family had to move to Out-With.

Gretel is Bruno’s twelve year old sister. Gretel is very sassy, and loves to try and boss Bruno around. Gretel tries to act older than she actually is, but in reality she is immature for her age, and owns a large collection of dolls. Gretel tries to flirt with Lieutenant Kotler because she is almost thirteen, even though she is not as mature as him and much younger.
Shmuel is very skinny and pale
Lieutenant Kotler is a German soldier who works for Bruno's father. He has very blond hair and always looks neat in his pressed uniform and freshly polished boots. Kotler is cruel to the butler named Pavel, because he is a Jew. Bruno does not like Kotler because he has an atmosphere that "made Bruno feel very cold and want to put a jumper on". Everyone seems to like Kotler in Bruno's family except for Bruno himself.

Shmuel, like Bruno, is a very small, nine year old boy, he also shares a birthday with Bruno. Shmuel was taken to a concentration camp after he lived above his father's watch shop in Poland. Shmuel is kind of oblivious of how bad things really are inside the camp, similar to Bruno.

Maria was the house maid at both houses, Berlin and Poland. Maria is very quiet and usually stays to herself. She doesn't like it when the children bad mouth the Commandant. She is very grateful towards the Commandant because he gave her a home and payed the funeral bills for her grandmother.
