In the year 1588, John Winthrop became worried that England was in trouble. People were pursuing wealth at the cost of their souls and trying to reform the Church of England had failed.
He was thinking about leaving but then he had a traumatic accident on his horse. He had survived and believed that it was a message from God. He thought God was telling him to create a holy community in New England.
John was chosen to be the governor. He led a speech called a "Model of Christian" , which is also called, " A City Upon a Hill." He wanted to be an example for the rest of the christians around the world. He told his travelers to respect God and their duties or they should die.
Winthrop and his fellow Puritans wanted to set a good example for England and Europe. They decided to sail westward so they could make a christian community.
John arrived in Boston. He assumed leadership of the colony. He had lots of responsibilities and always tried to do his tasks the best that he could. Repeatedly he was elected for governor and created a model Puritan colony.
One of his famous quotes were," We must consider that we shall be as a city upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us." John Winthrop was very important because he was a great political leader, very educated, and wise.
