The narrator stalked Shelia Mant during late summer in the 1960's, as he was falling in love. He tries to build up the courage to ask her out.
When the narrator finally built up enough courage to ask Sheila out, he did and told her he'd take her to the carnival in his canoe.
while the narrator listens to Shelia's whining, a large-mouth bass hooks on to the narrator's fishing rod , torn between Shelia and the fish he decides to cut the line and let go of the fish.
when they finally get to the carnival they dance once or twice and then Shelia tells the narrator that she was leaving in Eric Caswell's corvette
"You're a funny guy!"
After everything that had transpired that night the only thing the narrator regretted was letting go of the bass

Conflict: Man vs himself, the narrator was torn between Shelia and the bass. Man vs nature , he was trying to keep control of the boat when he had to paddle up a sluggish stream and also not losing the bass. Man vs Man, The narrator was fighting the bass so that he wouldn't lose it but eventually he decides to cut the line
