Help us, God...Please, let this plan works out ok
...As you can see, this is the perfect time and idea to leave this place.
Wait! What would happen if something with your plan went wrong like...
Somebody told on our plan!
Frederick Douglass was born into slavery, and now in his late teen years, it came to him that he was tired of being a slave, and Douglass wanted a plan to leave. So one day, he decided to gather up his friends to come up with a plan. His friends, Henry, John, and others met with Douglass to come up with a plan to escape the dreadful jaws of their plantation.
After thousands of years, Douglass and his friends finally decide on a good plan. "Next Saturday, the plan is to get a canoe to go up the Chesapeake Bay, past whatever amount of miles, and then to follow the guidance of the North Star to lead us past Maryland and through Canada." Before they leave, Douglass will make protections (small documents) that claim that the master let them leave and to do this.
That Saturday, right before the plan was to be put into action, Douglass was spreading manure next to his friend Henry when his gut cried that something was wrong with the plan. He turned around to Henry and told him, "Henry, I think we have been betrayed!" Henry replies, "It has crossed my mind as well."
A little later, the horn was blown as usual to signal that the morning food was ready. Going straight for the food, Frederick saw four white men at the lawn gate. "Frederick Baily!" Mr. Freeland said, "There are some men here who request your presence." As soon as Douglass went to meet these men, he didn't get a second's thought before they jumped on him. "WHIP! LASH!! CRACK!!!" They have tied up Frederick Douglass by the hands! A bit afterword, they had John in the same condition, but Henry took longer than John because he refused to be tied up.
STOP! You violated the law! Pay the court a fine or serve your sentence.
In a few hours, Douglass, Henry, and John all were put into a wagon to be taken to St.Michael to be, "inspected before their master". Henry then asked, "What am I to do with this pass, Frederick?" Douglass then said, "Remove it or eat it; just own nothing." Then, Douglass, Henry, and John repeated over and over, "Own nothing! Own Nothing! OWN NOTHING!!," their confidence and strength in each other growing with each time they chant.
For about one whole week, Douglass was in a stone prison for trying to run away from his master. He was sitting there, thinking to himself, when, boom! His master was heaven dressed up as hell as he surprisingly set him out of jail. The master had intentions of sending him to Alabama, but decided instead to send him back to the Auld's house in Baltimore.
