On the 29th of January 1840, Lieutenant Governor William Hobson arrived inNew Zealand.
meeting of chiefs was organised for a week later. Hobson was offered advice bymissionaries and others.
on Wednesday, February 5th, over 400 Maori attended a meeting in front of Busby’s house at Waitangi.
vigourous debate followed and many chiefs made it obvious they did not want to share power.
On Thursday, February 6th 1840, over 40 signatures or markswere appended to the Maori text of the Treaty and most were from the Bay ofIslands.
Over the next seven months, missionaries and officials carried the Treaty around the country
