  • IN 1557 when Elizabeth I was queen of England and Phillip II was King of Spain, the two countries did not like eachother much.
  • The invasion
  • Elizabeth I (a Protestant) had just singed the death warrent for the Mary queen of Scotland (who was a Cathholic.) This was the final straw King Philip of Spain, who was also a Catholic.
  • Fire in the hole!
  • FIRE! RUN!
  • See ya later fools!
  • The Spanish Armada sailed in a cresent shape and were nearly impossible to beat in this formation. THe English knew that they would have to break them up to deafet the Armada.
  • And stay out!
  • In 1558 Phillip sent 130 warships to invade England. The English saw the Armada and lit fine beacons along the country to warn London. When Sir Francis Drake (Commander of the British Fleet) saw the Armada,he (apparently) finished his game of bowls before setting off!
  • So the English sent burning ships to sail into the Spanish fleet whilst they were anchored of Calais in France. The Spanish panicked and the Armada scattered in all directions, breaking the cresant formation.
  • The Armada tried to escape back to Spain by sailing north (around the top of Great Britain ) but bad weather blew them to the rocky coast of Ireland and Scotland. The English ships then attacked the Spanish fleet. They were quicker and had better cannons so they were able to inflict a lot of damage.
