  • In San Francisco, California there was wood needed to make docks and buildings. So people started getting wood in Washington because there are a lot of territory's with big and tall trees.
  • They chop down trees near water and float them downstream while they were pulled by boats. And then they got the logs to San Francisco, California. This became a big business in Washington and many towns sprang up.
  • The Pacific ocean and the rivers of Washington are full of fish which were sold to other cities. And fish got more popular when they started being put in cans. Then the fishing industry became more popular because of Robert Hune but then in the 1900s salmon in the Columbia river were declined do to over fishing. .
  • The miners in Puget Sound lowlands and Cascade Mountains found coal. Coal was used to keep houses worm and create power for factories. Many of the early miners were Chinese, from England and Wales, also some African-Americans came to dig coal and even children were hired to sort coal.
  • Then when people discovered high quality coal in Skttitas County led to a very large development of the Roslyn Coal Field in 1886. This caused coal mining to become very important to Washington until the 1900's
  • In 1855 word got out that gold and silver had been found in Washington. Many of these lands were reserved lands to native Americans. Merchants in Walla Walla, Spokane and Seattle grew rich by supplying food, tents, tools and clothing to miners on their way to the gold fields
