In the image Ralph is seen tending to the fire, while the others are out hunting.
"'The fire is the most important thing on the island. How can we ever be rescued except by luck, if we don't keep a fire going? '" (Golding 80)
Ralph is trying to convince the boys that the only way to escape the treacherous island is through the signal fire. The boys seem to think that the most important thing is hunting and providing food for the group. This conflict creates and separation between the boys, one group being savage and one being civil.
