Storyboard Text

  • This is King George III. He has just won the French and Indian War. Now, he owns most of North America, and he must defend it from the French.
  • North America is MINE!
  • To defend it, George decided to pass the Proclamation of 1763. The proclamation stated that no English colonists could settle west of the Appalachian Mountains.
  • I know! I will keep peace with the Natives by letting them keep their land!
  • It also made it easier for King George to control the colonists since they weren't allowed to move west of the Appalachians.
  • The English colonists, unlike the British, were infuriated by the proclamation. They were forbidden to settle in the land that they fought for and were being taxed for!
  • I know, right? We fought for this land! We deserve it!
  • This is so unfair! We're paying for land that we can't even live on!
  • Then, since Britain believed in mercantilism, the Navigation Acts were passed by George, who was addicted to making laws.
  • These laws stated that the colonists could only sell things to Britain. They also stated that if they couldn't import goods from foreign markets unless they were taxed by Britain.
  • Now, they can only trade with ME! What're you gonna do about it?
  • As a result of the Navigation Acts, the colonists began to smuggle goods.
  • I'm not paying these stupid taxes!
  • Neither am I!
  • Britain's prime minister, George Grenville, wanted to stop the smuggling.
  • He convinced Parliament to pass a law. This law stated that accused smugglers would be tried by royally appointed judges instead of local juries, because American juries usually found the smugglers innocent. The royal judges wouldn't be so nice.
  • That's a good idea!
