  • Let the people figure it out themselves. The Federal Government cannot give out lots of money!
  • Hoover was elected in 1928 amid the "roaring 20s" optimism and economic prosperity. At the start of the Depression he remained optimistic that the economy would recover quickly.
  • Both
  • Hoover and FDR were president during the Great Depression. Both increased public works during their administrations.
  • Franklin Delano Roosevelt
  • FDR was elected 1932 with the promise of a "New Deal" for Americans. He was known for his unprecedented confidence, charm, and determination to solve Depression.
  • Let's put the people to work. The Federal Government will provide direct relief!
  • President Hoover worked with private business to try and help the government recover. He founded the National Credit Corporation to help troubled banks, and the Reconstruction Finance Corporation to help improve the nation's infrastructure.
  • Roosevelt's created many programs and policies known as the New Deal. The New Deal regulated the stock market and banks, and created relief and work programs. FDR increased government spending to fund the New Deal.
