  • In 1916 Emily Murphy becomes the first female judge in the british empire. Some lawyers refuse to accept her judgements.
  • Your opinion is garbage!
  • You are not a person!
  • In 1917 a group of women put forward murphy as a candidate for the senate. Robert Bordon refuses to accept her as a qualified person.
  • You are not a qualified person!
  • Canada's Constitution act at the time specified that only "qualified persons" could be senators. Unfortunately under these circumstances the definition did not include women.
  • Only men can be senators!
  • Murphy and four other women took the case to the Supreme Court of Canada, who ruled that only men were persons and could be senators.
  • Canadian women are persons!
  • The women took their case to the Privy Council in Britain and they ruled that canadian women are pesons.

  • Liberal Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King named Carine Wilson to the Senate. Unfortunately King bypassed Murphy because of her ties to the Conservative Party.
