Storyboard Text

  • Northern Free States: Why did they oppose it?
  • I hereby pass the Missouri compromise.
  • How do you feel about the government's decision in the addition of the two northern states?
  • Im perfectly fine with it. As they are the final law of the land
  • Northern Free States: Beleifs about Congressional Power?
  • How do you feel about congress's power over whether states are fee or not?
  • As long as there is a balance in power between slave states and free states I'm fine with it.
  • Northern Free States: Fears about the Compomise?
  • Because the compromise allows slavery to move west, possibly allowing slave states to get more power than the north in congress
  • Why are you Northrners so worried about the compromise?
  • The compromise allowed the slave states to expand as long as they stayed below the 36-30 line.
  • Southern Slave States: Why did they support it?
  • I would be delighted if they pass that Missouri compromise.
  • They were fine with the congress deciding whether states were free or not as long as there was a balance of power in congress.
  • Southern Slave States:  Beleifs about states' rights?
  • We like states rights. As they would allow slavery to expand to the west as long as it is below the 36, 30 line.
  • So... What do you Southerners think about states rights?
  • Northern free states worried that the compromise would allow slavery to move to the west. They also feared that slave states would get more power in Congress since they would have more states.
  • Southern Slave States:  Fears about the Compromise?
  • And, do you have any fears about the compromise?
  • They supported the compromise because it would add a slave state to the union, and they would see the spread of slavery into the west.
  • Yeah, if they pass that compromise we could see new slave states being added in, as well as the spread of slavery to the west
  • The southerners liked states rights because that meant that they could expand slavery as long as it was below the 36-30 line.
  • They thought that this would be a start to the end of slavery. They thought that it would threaten the spread of slavery in the future, due to the fact that congress had the power to choose which states were free or slavery states. They worried that one day if the power in congress shifted towards the north enough, the government might as well completely abolish slavery.
  • We fear that the compromise could be the start to the end of slavery. Since congress has the power to choose which states are free or not, the more states they make free, and the less states they make slave states, slavery could eventually be abolished.
