BUT WHAT HAPPENED?
Sorry for the unexpected session Ms. Makala... life's just been hard recently...
It all started when Mommy took away my lactose...
Ladies and Gentlemen, Welcome to my movie, "Bacteria"
TEST 1: REPRESSION
We did 3 tests on my special bacteria, Bill. Hope you enjoy!
I'M STARVING, WHY DID MOM TAKE AWAY MY LACTOSE
OPERATOR, my name is repressor and you're under arrest!
(Narrator). Bill's lactose was taken away as lactose is the inducer that starts gene expression. Without it, repression occurs and the repressor protein binds to the operator.
THIS MEANS THAT RNA POLYMERASE CANNOT BIND TO THE OPERATOR AS IT IS LOCKED IN THE CELL WITH THE REPRESSOR PROTEIN! WITHOUT RNA POLYMERASE, GENE TRANSCRIPTION CANNOT START.
TEST 2: ACTIVATION
Mom gave me back my lactose!
