In the book Charlie describes his father's room as "very much the way he left it" He goes in more detail describing "Old posters with baseball players".
In the novel, Sam and Patrick's house is describe as, "It was a rich house... very clean." "The outside lights were on, and it was snowing, and it looked magical" is how their house was described in the winter.
At school Charlie says "Can I have a cigarette?". He then goes on to think "I couldn't bring myself to say (Bum a smoke)." Charlie is elaborating on what he said and why he said it.
