  • “Fence by the schoolyard!—hurry, Scout!”
  • Chapter 7
  • “Tree’s dying. You plug ‘em with cement when they’re sick. You ought to know that, Jem.”
  • Chapter 8
  • The night before summer ended, Jem and Dill decided to peek on Radley’s home. Scout went with them; naturally under a lot of pressure. After a failed attempt, they managed to scape through a narrow fence. Just when they hear shooting behind them, Jem’s pants get stuck with some wires, so he ran away without them. After the commotion inside the neighborhood, Jem went for his pants.
  • Chapter 9
  • School started; Jem confessed Scout that the night of the incident, he found his pants neatly folded. After a while, they both came to the conclusion that someone is leaving presents specifically for them.They found another present, a ball of twine, yet mysteriously cemented near a tree from Radley property. Jem didn't believe Nathan's explanation.
  • Chapter 10
  • It was the first time Jem and Scout got to see snow, and school was canceled. At night, Maudie Atkinson's house went on fire. After bringing the fire down, Atticus and his children returned home. Scout was covered with a blanket she didn't know where it came from. That's when Jem realized it must have been Boo Radley who put the blanket on her. Jem, desperate, told Atticus the truth about the presents.
  • Jem and Scout found out that their father was defending in court Tom Robinson, a black man accused of rapping a white woman. Even if the case was already lost, Atticus still required a shot. On Christmas Eve the family traveled to Finch's Landing, where Francis fought Scout about her father morals (nigger lover).Scout told uncle Jack what Francis said, but made him promise to remain a secret.

  • Scout and Jem didn't comprehend why everyone was extremely unpleasant to Atticus about Tom Robinson. He was the perfect example of a worthy man compared to the other dads at Maycomb. Scout asked uncle Jack for shooting lessons; Atticus instantly reminded her to never kill a mockingbird, for it was a sin. That afternoon, Atticus shooter neatly a rabid dog from the neighborhood. Atticus was the most accurate shot in Maycomb County.
  • “Mr. Finch, this is a one-shot job.”
