Rethinking Learning Design: CHF02 (Foundation Chemistry Lab Assignment)
Hello there and welcome to the redesigned CHF02 Lab assignment for semester 1. In order to complete the CHF02 course successfully, you need to complete 4 lab assignments during the course of the semester. The assignment is carried out in groups where each group is expected to research online or offline for a "topic related" reaction that they will be able to carry out in the lab. In doing so they will need to develop their hypothesis, objectives and determine the method to use to carry out the reaction.
Learning via IBL and PBL: Lab Assignment
Hi there students, since we are focusing on Limiting Reactant for Friday's lab next week I want you to form groups and research on a safe reaction to carry out in the lab, come up with a hypothesis, objectives and method. You can contact me using Google hangout or Skype to keep me updated on your progress over the weekend.
Online and Offline Research
Once we determine our hypothesis and objectives, we can then determine the reaction by searching online . Once we find the reaction, the method will also be determined.
After that, we can then Skype with Mrs Lill (instructor), so that she can check on the reaction we have chosen and our method.
The new redesigned CHF02 lab assignment consists of 4 lab assignments. Students are divided into groups and are asked to research on a reaction that can be carried out in the lab. This needs to be relevant to the topic being discussed for that week. They will then determine their hypothesis, objectives, reaction and the method to be used before the upcoming lab. They will then carry out their experiment, determine their results and find out whether their hypothesis has been proven or disapproved. They will then be asked to present on their findings in class.
The setting is a classroom. Students are listening to their teacher/instructor relay information on their next lab assignment which is being held the following Friday. Since the students are focusing on the topic of "Limiting Reactant", the instructor has asked them to carry out the following: research (online or offline) on a safe reaction to carry out in the lab, develop a hypothesis, objectives and determine the method to be used. She has also mentioned that the students can contact her using Google hangout or Skype to keep her updated on their progress or to answer their queries.
Over the weekend, one of the groups decided to meet up and work on their lab assignment. They decided that once they were done, they will then contact their instructor via Skype, so that they could tell her what there progress was like and what their findings were. To reflect on this, I would say that this assignment allows students to work together and think critically about the work they are doing. It also allows them to search online and use ICT tools.
