Persepolis Final Project

Storyboard Description

For your final project you need to create a comic strip that explores a social injustice, just like much of Marjane's book explored. The story should be told from a first person perspective: whether that person is witnessing the injustice or experiencing it. It must be clear how this is a social injustice.

Storyboard Text

  • That's me right there. The only black girl in my school.
  • You are 4 and a half minutes late! I hope you have a good excuse you worthless black scum!
  • I walked into school one day. I thought it was going to be a great day, but oh, how terribly wrong I was.
  • I mean really, she's black! What does he expect?
  • I can't believe the teacher makes you share a desk with her!
  • Sounds absolutely DREADFUL!
  • It is awful! All black people are total snobs!
  • Yeah, everyone knows their dull or mental! Did you hear about those shootings in Chicago?
  • Black people are such losers!
  • Alas, I had no such luck. The only person that shared my thoughts was a girl named Maeve and she had moved to Texas last year. I missed her terribly.
  • So that's what they really thought of me. I felt sick. Sick to my stomach.
  • A few days later, my teacher got mad and suspended me for a week. Since I had a week off of school, my parents encouraged me to tell my story to the Black Lives Matters founders.
  • Unfortunately, I couldn't go to a new school. Mom and Dad had to pay for food, me and my little sister's education, and bills. This was one of the lowest costing "nice" school that they could afford. My sister went to a public preschool.
  • Hi! I'm Alicia Garza. Opal and Patrisse'll be along soon. While we wait let me take some notes.
  • Another day, I overheard a conversation in the cafeteria.
  • I spent many days sick, in which my parents let me stay home from school. I was in a depressed state but I knew there was something that would make me feel better.
  • A week later, a meeting was requested.
  • I explained my predicament, and learned about a special protest that would be happening on Wednesday.
