Getting ready to attack
The trenches are filling up for battle.
The Confederates run out of supplies and surrender.
The Union led by Ulysses S. Grant attacked an important rail center.
The beginning of the battle
They would use trench warfare. There where 30 miles of trenches.
Battle of Vicksburg, 1862
They fought for nine months. The Confederate Army had less supplies and had to retreat. The Union Army took control of Petersburg and Richmond.
The end for General Pemberton
The Union attacked so they could take control of the Mississippi River.
Admiral Porter took his troops on a flotilla.
The Union troops surrounded the city of Vicksburg with 70,000 troops. 29,000 of Pemberton's troops were trapped in the city of Vicksburg. The Union troops won the battle of Vicksburg on July 4th.
